This historic resort offers unbeatable beach access and proximity to Johns Pass, but recent owners have drastically reduced maintenance and staffing, leading to cleanliness issues and unreliable amenities that have alienated long-time guests.

We have gone to the Surfsong for 20 years. It was always great until about 3 years ago when they got a new management company. It was always well taken care of until then. The pool wasn’t cleaned it was cloudy and dirty for 4 days until the complete finally came. They now only have one maintenance man only part time his name is Scott he does a great job but he is only one man with only a few hours a week to take care of the whole property. I really don’t think that we will be going back there

Just returned from surf song. Been vacationing there over the years from 1989. Our room 224 was excellent as expected however and this breaks my heart. The pool and exterior has gone down. Arriving Friday we hopped into the clear pool and enjoying every minute. Saturday we noticed it getting cloudy by Sunday the pool was a disguising. A lady we met took a water sample to have tested. Came back no chlorine, no stabilizer. No chemicals at all. After many calls to the management office controlling the outside property it came down to threats of public health because children/adults swimming could get ear, eye or staf infections. The pool company shows up. Finally on Monday afternoon the company showed up. Their pool tech admitted to my daughter the chlorine ran out Friday and he knew it. When the Tollivers ran surf song, Steve would be there every morning vacuuming and testing. No one vacuumed once while we were there. Now I’m told an independent runs the pool and doesn’t give a hoot about our health or the condition if the pool. On Tuesday we swam and the levels where so high it was burning my eye going under water. On top of that the elevator broke down with us inside. Scary with a child. The shuffle board is taped off needing much repairs and some of the umbrellas need replacing. The last thing steve or Tim would do is lock up the pool at 9:30. Well let me let you the hollering and party in the pool was annoying after 10:30. This went on till after 11. There is no outside management onsite, so it’s a free for all. I think the Board of Directors need to reevaluate their decision to remove the Tollivers. Surf sing Ran like a well oiled engine. Now it’s a sinking ship but I hear the Board of directors know (owners) knows people will rent and then find out after they have their places are rented. I’m really going to have to think hard about booking again. ??

We’ve been coming to Surf Song for the last 10 years. All of our rooms have always been great and Location is always great, but things have really changed. As of now, service is so-so, amenities are eh, and the room we had this year (239) not great. The balcony in this room, I know is a law suit waiting to happen. The bars are rusted, most to the point of total detachment. So any amount of weight pushes the bar outwards, off the balcony. The water pressure in the shower was literally a trickle. There’s water pressure everywhere else so this condo owner just needs to buy a new shower head. Shuffleboard is gone, which was always so much fun for us- the elevator was TERRIBLE. We took the stairs the entire stay unless we have to take a bunch up to the room. So it takes about 5 min for the elevator to open, even once it’s on your floor. And then another 5 min to open when you’re in it- So you sit in this elevator wondering if it’s going to open or if you should press the help button. Awful, especially for folks with anxiety/claustrophobia. So lots could be fixed. Also, they are raising rates anywhere from $400-$700/week. The hotel, even though on the beach, is not worth the $1600 we spent for the 7 days we were there, let alone $2000-$2700 for a week.

Once a beautiful place…has gone to the dogs. Management has changed and they totally ignore this place. No maintenance person works here. Paint is peeling on the exterior…broken boards are “fixed” by hanging caution tape on them. The sidewalks haven’t been swept in at least 10 days…and the swimming pool cleaned once in 3 weeks.

Surf Song resort is in a great location. The pool was very nice. Unit 230 needs a lot of updating. The bedroom carpets were filthy and stained. The bathroom fixtures in the master bath were rusted and moldy and the other bathroom wasn't much better. The bar stool seats were stained. The dehumidifier that ran almost all the time was dirty. The kitchen was well appointed and the mattresses were fine. The living room furniture was okay. The unit was not as clean as I expected it would be. I would NOT recommend this unit to anyone.

SURF SONG IS A GEM. Pros: Beautiful property grounds, nice swimming pool, direct access to the beach directly behind resort. Unit 116 was very clean. Cons: Unit 116 only has 1 door which faces the parking lot area. (You can see the pool and beach from a large window) but you can't walk right out of the unit to the pool or beach (not a big deal for us but it may be for you). Unit (116) is VERY dated like 1980's, the bathroom is closer to 60's or 70's era. It desperately needs a new stove, fridge and dishwasher (they work but are rusty). They did put new tile in the unit so thats a plus. ? Directly across from Johns Pass. We LOVED the location and the common areas of this quaint little resort. We might stay in this unit again...might not depending on availability of other units here. Other units have been updated, ours had not. We would stay at this resort again. Nice staff, friendly guy cleaning the pool each morning.

Location and pool are very nice. Condo needs updates. Master bath is super small. Furniture very worn. Carpet is dirty. Towels and bed linens were clean but bathrooms and floors needed to be cleaned better. We cleaned bathrooms ourselves rather than complain but then our AC went out around 9pm. “Nothing they could do until next morning”. A very nice woman did call and offered to move us down the street for the night, just to sleep for the night. Not a very good option for 4 people at 10:30pm. So we ended up w 2 box fans. Still no AC and no one expected until “afternoon sometime.” I asked to be credited for the night but they said it was unlikely since they offered to let us move for one night. We left early. One other thing to mention, this condo has no view of the beach and no balcony. Also laundry is on site but on a timer. Laundry can only be used from 9am-9pm. Master bedroom faces the Main Street and John’s Pass so isn’t very quiet.

If you're the kind of person who craves the luxury of the Ritz-Carlton, you will be disappointed in the Surf Song resort. However, if you just want an economical beach vacation with plenty of activities nearby and a clean, comfortable room you will not find a better fit. We have gone to Mexico every spring for years and love the wonderful resorts and beaches in Cancun. I still love them and never intended to do anything else. But life keeps coming at you and this year with the pandemic we did not want to risk going out of the country. We chose the Surf Song in Madeira Beach because my brother comes here every year and loves it. I'll be honest. My first impression was not good. Compared to the resorts of Cancun I felt like I had just checked into a cheap motel on Route 66 that need major upgrades. By the third day I had gotten past my preconceptions and absolutely loved it. I just booked a 2 week stay for next April.

BE AWARE: This company has no morals. Booked a place 4 months in advance of staying, however there was a system glitch and our reservation was deleted AFTER our payment. Came to find out the place we booked was then put back on the market and re-booked by someone else. The people that booked it booked 2 months AFTER the original booking. The company was only willing to either refund us the money or put us at a different location at no discounted cost. Will never go through them again.

We stayed in unit 241, beachfront 2 bed/2 bath. Pros: large 2 bedroom condo, full kitchen, balcony. Clean. Very responsive desk staff. Heated pool, patio tables and chairs. There was an area by the beach entrance for beach chairs to use left by prior guests, first come/first serve. The kitchen was supplied well, we did light cooking. Both bedrooms have 2 queens. Towels were supplied, 6 in each bathroom. 2 kitchen towels also. No beach towels though. Plenty of toilet paper for our stay. This was our second stay with Sunhost, so knew to bring paper towels and any other items we wanted. We had an unexpected issue on Friday night at 7pm , called the after hours number, and it was sorted quickly and to our satisfaction. We did use the washer/dryer on the 3rd floor, $1 to wash/dry each. The only thing that would have improved Surf Song would be a restroom by the pool. We would stay here again.
